2nd Annual SEIU Fishing Day

The weather could not have been more perfect for SEIU's 2nd Annual "Take a Kid" Fishing Day on Wednesday August 8 at the Bellwood Lake Conservation Area in Fergus, Ontario. SEIU loaded up four school buses with members and their children for a fun-filled day of fishing in the great outdoors and some BBQ delights.

More than 100 children attended Fishing Day this year. The annual tradition is in memory of SEIU Union Representative Rob West, who passed away in 2010.

"SEIU takes great pride in providing opportunities for our younger members of the SEIU family to be exposed to a diverse range of fun and educational activities," said Sharleen Stewart, President of SEIU Local 1 Canada. "We hope we're helping them create memories that will last a lifetime. You see the joy on their faces and I'm certain we created a few more outdoor enthusiasts in the process!"

There were tons of activities for the children to enjoy. The "Fishing School" gave kids a crash-course in the various types of fish found in Ontario ponds and lakes, and the importance of preserving our environment for future generations to enjoy. A lesson in fly-fishing, and they were off to catch their first fish!

Later in the afternoon, the children competed in potato sack races, battled each other in a classic tug-of-war and won prizes by spinning the "Wheel of SEIU"!
