April 2014 - Lights…camera…homecare!

SEIU Healthcare’s enthusiastic members have done a lot to improve working conditions for homecare workers. But this is only the beginning in our journey towards improving the system. That’s why nearly 100 SEIU Healthcare members attended the union’s Homecare Summit on March 12-13 in Toronto to learn what next steps need to be taken to fix Ontario’s ailing homecare system.

This group of dedicated homecare workers and activists discussed the bold stand we took with the Red Cross strike in late-December with SEIU President Sharleen Stewart, and the gains we’ve made since. The group was first to see the newly-launched Sweet$16 campaign that is being rolled out throughout the province. (To read more about the campaign see our next article in this newsletter).

The majority of the Summit focused on activism. The ongoing battle for better working conditions for PSWs and other healthcare workers is one that has to be done actively and in collaboration – a strong theme throughout the Summit. Members had the opportunity to take part in tutorials and learn more about taking an active role building support for a stronger homecare system in their workplaces and in their communities.

The overwhelming feedback after the summit was that delegates left feeling like they are a part of a strong social movement that will transform our homecare system to the better.
