What is Convention?
SEIU’s Convention is a formal assembly of delegates for discussion and action on particular matters of common interest relating to the local. Delegates will have the opportunity to learn, listen, contribute to ideas, vote for resolutions, and your Executive Board, as well as participate in establishing the goals and direction of the Local for the next four years.
What is a “delegate”?
A delegate is a person chosen to vote or act for others during convention.
Who is eligible to apply for convention?
As per Article 3.1 of the SEIU Local 1 Canada Constitution, “Any member of Local 1 Canada who has paid their dues shall be a member in good standing.” Members in good standing are eligible to apply. The deadline for 2015 applications was July 16, 2015.
How will the “delegates” be chosen?
As per article 6.2 of the Constitution, “the Executive Board of this Local Union shall determine the number of delegates and the process for regional and divisional representation.” The Executive Board passed a motion to have each workplace represented at convention. This means that each workplace will be entitled to have one (1) delegate attend. Members in good standing who wish to be a delegate must apply. Delegates will be selected by a neutral third party.
What happens if I am chosen as a delegate?
Successful delegates will be notified the first week of September by email.
