Holiday Wrap Up

Happy New Year! Yes, I am aware that it’s 2015 already, but the holidays seemed to fly by just like jolly old St. Nick and his sled of toys for the little girls and boys. December has historically been a blur around the SEIU offices; last year we were out picketing with Personal Support Workers helping fight for a fair wage and equality. This year, although less hectic, still has proven to be a frenzied time.

SEIU Healthcare’s Greater Toronto Area Downtown Hospital’s held their 3rd Annual Holiday Party on Saturday December 20th at the Eaton Chelsea Hotel. I hosted the event this year which was a pleasant change from my normal photography duties. Hosting the event gave me the opportunity to entertain as well as educate a few members on all things SEIU. It was exciting to be able to show some of the footage from the “Tomorrow Together Road trip” that took place earlier in the Fall and get some much needed feedback from our downtown hospital members. Everyone in attendance looked fantastic and enjoyed a tasty sit down dinner. A few lucky individuals won raffle prizes and most stuck around a danced late into the night; typically the norm for our members.

A few pictures from the event can be found here on our Flickr page.

A special thanks to all those that attended the event as well as the volunteers and staff that helped make the event run as smoothly as possible. A big shout out to Mike Guzman for making this holiday event a huge success; your hard work and dedication from the very first holiday event has made this event memorable.
Our members were also very busy during the holiday season. One member in particular decided for the second straight year to give back to a community of which he is a part of. Jason Miller of The One More Wear Foundation is a part-time food services worker at Kennedy Lodge in Scarborough and a full-time social worker in Peel Region. Obviously he’s a very busy young man but he still found the time to hold his 2nd Annual Picture Perfect Holiday Event at the Ellesmere Community Centre on December 14th. This event gave families from the Scarborough community the opportunity to have a fun-filled afternoon decorating cookies, playing games, taking a pictures with Santa and receive a gift, all this at no cost to the children and their families. Jason is a member of SEIU Healthcare’s EMERG and understands the value that having these type of events have with those who need it the most. SEIU Healthcare treasurer Emanuel Carvalho also took some time to collect and donate a few suits, ties and trousers to The One More Foundation during the holiday season, helping to contribute to the growth of this non-profit community organization.
