We worked in partnership with the Ontario Caregiver Coalition on this amendment to the Employment Standards Act that applies to all employees in Ontario, whether full-time, part-time, permanent, or term contract.
It provides up to 8 weeks' leave to all workers caring for an critically-ill relative.
SEIU Healthcare has advocated for the bill since 2012. It finally received royal assent on April 29, 2014, and went into effect on October 29, 2014.
The bill builds on the existing Family Medical Leave by creating additional job-protected leaves:
- Family Caregiver Leave
- Critically Ill Child Care Leave
- Crime-related Child Death or Disappearance Leave
Our healthcare system must be compassionate and serve Ontario families. Family caregiving is increasingly part of the continuum of care, and this legislation allows Ontarians to be there for ill and injured family members in their time of need.
