National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada

Remembrance Day

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Every year on December 6, we observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada.

This day commemorates the tragedy that occurred on December 6, 1989, when an armed man stormed into a classroom at École Polytechnique in Montreal and targeted women. 14 female students lost their lives and 10 others were injured on this horrendous day.

Today, we reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society. While the women’s movement has achieved many victories in the 27 years since this tragedy, there is still much work to be done. Together, we can continue to work towards absolute equality not only in our workplaces, but in our communities and homes as well.

In solidarity,

Sharleen Stewart

President, SEIU Healthcare
