Being a target of violence is a daily reality for many women today. This isn’t a reflection of some far off place or remote country- this happens here- in our hometown, in our neighborhood, and in our Country. In fact:
Half of all women in Canada have been physically or sexually assaulted.
67% of all Canadians say they personally know at least one woman who has been sexually or physically assaulted.
Every six days a woman is killed in Canada by her partner.
200 women every day are turned away from shelters because they are full.
40,000 people every year are arrested on domestic assault charges.
To show solidarity with these women, take a moment today to acknowledge the women in your life on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day was established after 14 young women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal were murdered, in 1989- their only crime being that they were women. We hope their lives were not lost in vain.
