SURVEY: Take 5 minutes to complete the home and community health worker survey and win a $25 gift card!

Are you a personal support worker, community support worker, healthcare aide, nurse aide and/or a home support worker?

SEIU Healthcare, in collaboration with research experts, is inviting you to fill out a survey to evaluate home and community health worker motivations for remaining in their current job and motivations for accepting a new job.

The current survey is specifically targeted to Personal Support Workers, Community Support Workers, Healthcare Aides, Nurse Aides, and Home Support Workers. The results will be used to provide additional insight into the community health worker sector and the preferences of workers.

This is a chance for your voice to be heard in terms of what is important to you and to guide future initiatives in the sector. As a token of our appreciation, there is a drawing to win one of five $25 Tim Hortons Gift Cards for completed surveys.

Take 5 minutes to complete the survey by clicking the link below.

Professional Liability Protection – we have our nurses covered!

You may have heard that, effective March 31, 2014, all RNs and RPNs practicing in Ontario must have Professional Liability Protection (PLP).

SEIU Healthcare is proud of the critically important work nurses do every day keeping Ontarians healthy. That is why we are thrilled to report that we have you covered!

SEIU Healthcare will cover the full cost of Professional Liability Protection for every nurse in good standing, with no added cost to the member.

PLP will cover medical malpractice. In most cases, it includes failure to meet a 'standard of care' or failure to deliver care that a reasonably prudent nurse would deliver in a similar situation.

Most common malpractice claims against nurses include:

- Failure to follow standards of care

- Failure to use equipment in a responsible manner

- Failure to communicate

- Failure to document

- Failure to assess and monitor

- Failure to act as a patient advocate

SEIU will work closely with our insurance provider to ensure our nurses are covered. If you are an SEIU RN or RPN and haven't already done so, please call the Member Resource Centre (MRC) at 1-877-MRC-SEIU (672-7348) to update your contact information, which will be sent to the insurance provider.

If you do not receive your insurance certificate by May 31, 2014, please call the MRC. Sisters and Brothers, we hope you enjoy this added benefit to your SEIU Healthcare membership.

International Women's Day 2014: The survey will help break the silence about violence in the workplace and the impact of violence at home

Click on the image below for the .pdf and French versions and
be sure to take the survey at the end.

Why International Women's Day is still important

The pay gap between men and women has narrowed since the 1970s. But the battle is far from over.

The latest numbers from Statistics Canada says women in Ontario earn only 72 cents for every dollar men earn. That means men still make nearly 30% more than women do.

Men will never see women as their equals until women earn the same amount of money as they do. Even though Ontario has passed pay equity laws to address this problem, unions still need to continue the fight to close the pay gap in the workplace. It’s an important part of SEIU Healthcare’s commitment to women’s rights.

Take part in our fight for women’s equality by joining SEIU Healthcare at an International Women’s Day rally on March 8 in Toronto. Hundreds of women and men all across the GTA will be paying tribute to strong SEIU women who are helping close the wage gap in their workplaces.

The rally begins at 11:00 am at the OISE building at 252 Bloor Street West. See below for full event details.
