Did you know its Healthcare Food Services Workers Week?

On October 7 – 13, SEIU Healthcare will celebrate the important work food service workers perform in our hospitals, nursing and retirement homes, and other healthcare facilities across Ontario.

Preparing food in our healthcare facilities isn’t just about making a lunch. They help ensure patients, residents and clients eat well-prepared meals that are healthy and enjoyable. They also keep our healthcare cafeterias and kitchens clean and sanitary. It’s all about therapeutic diet preparation that’s critical to their healing and overall well being.

Healthcare Food Service Workers Week is celebrated every year. It builds enthusiasm and pride for the quality work healthcare food service employees provide every day on the job.

SEIU applauds dietary workers and other members of the nutrition services team for their hard work and dedication to our healthcare system!

We invite all healthcare food service members to enter a special raffle to win an iPod Shuffle, gift cards, and much more. To enter, please call the Member Resource Centre at 1-877-672-7348 by Friday, October 18!

Ottawa's Bus-Train Crash September 18, 2013

So many of our SEIU Healthcare family are daily commuters. When I saw the news today regarding this terrible crash in Ottawa I reflected on just how fragile life is. We’re the heart of healthcare. It’s our job to preserve life sustain life and do our utmost to better the working lives of our members. A tragedy like this is a terrible reminder to take the time to hug your loved ones every chance you get. On behalf of the 55,000 plus members of the SEIU Healthcare family here in Canada, I would like to extend my condolences to the families of those who had loved ones killed today in Ottawa’s tragic bus/train crash, and to extend best wishes for a speedy recovery to those who have been injured. Our hearts go out to you. Sincerely, Sharleen Stewart, President, SEIU Healthcare.

Put the Purple on the Green . . . for a Good Cause

This year SEIU Healthcare will be hosting its 7th Annual SEIU Brooke Lynn Charity Golf Tournament, scheduled for Mon, Sep. 9, 2013 at the Cardinal Golf Course in Kettleby, ON at 2740 Davis Drive West (formerly Hwy 9) just east of Hwy 400.

Please consider forming a team and joining us on the golf course; we would love to share a day of fun with you and your colleagues.

Have a look at our event brochure. It has all the details you need to form a team, as well as information on the many ways you can contribute as a sponsor.

All proceeds are donated directly to the Starlight Children’s Foundation in memory of Brooke Lynn Brunetta, who experienced Starlight’s special kindness during her courageous struggle with terminal cancer. Brooke Lynn was a much loved, and now dearly missed, daughter of SEIU Healthcare’s IT Director Steven Brunetta.

Please help us support the Starlight Children’s Foundation – and the many children and families who receive care from Starlight during times of critical childhood illness.

A Message from Locked Out Funeral Workers, Members of SEIU Healthcare

After 36 days of being locked out by US Funeral Giant Service International Corporation our locked out members, part-time transfer drivers for Dignity Memorial Canada-SCI, and 8 full-time employees voted to ratify the company’s last offer.

Dignity-SCI locked out our members from the Delmoro Funeral Home – a central location for the company in the GTA – on June 27th.

What the employer was expecting though didn’t happen. Our members won all the battles in the court and in the court of public opinion. Did they make an impact? Yes. As a result the people of Toronto and our supporters everywhere know more about how “Wal-Marterization” has changed how the funeral industry operates.

“In the end it’s about self-respect and our members showed they have that in spades,” said Doug Power, union rep for SEIU Healthcare, speaking about our locked out members.

Congratulations to our 2012-2013 SEIU Local 1 Canada Scholarship Winners!

Every year, SEIU awards four scholarships to extraordinary children of SEIU members. These young people not only excel academically, but give back to their communities as well.

Winners:

Jennifer Ai – Shelley Martel Scholarship – daughter of Noah Ai who works at Dundurn Place Care Centre and Idlewyld Manor Nursing Home

Rui Liu – Ted Roscoe Memorial Scholarship – daughter of Yan Hong Hou who works at Sunnybrook Health Science Center

Heather Lamourie – Albert G. Hearn Scholarship - daughter of Lesley Lamourie who works at Headwaters Healthcare Corporation

Danielle Luciani – Leading the Way Scholarship - daughter of David Luciani who works at Niagara Health System
