September 2014 - The Best Ever: A Purple Day for the record books!

You came to work... and you conquered with your purple spirit! Thank you to all the members who celebrated Purple Day 2014! This year was our most popular year ever, with thousands of you from throughout Ontario participating in one of our five competitions. Purple Day is truly a day for SEIU Members to show off their purple pride & get together to celebrate being part of the labour movement… and boy did you guys celebrate! Many of you won some great prizes too!

Several units won prizes for their wildest and wackiest Purple Day photos. The best photo award went to Bon Air Nursing Home, located in Cannington, Ontario. With a lot of creativity and a little bit of Photoshop, they looked like they were sailing on a small fishing boat that was headed straight over Niagara Falls. And they looked pretty relaxed about it too!

With dozens of units submitting photos, this year’s competition was tougher than ever. It was a difficult decision to make, but after a lot of discussion, a few winners were chosen. Regional winners include Fenelon Court Long-Term Care, Mon-Sheong Richmond Hill Long-Term Care, Extendicare Canada Inc- Mississauga, Ritz Lutheran Villa, and Lutheran Nursing Home. When it comes to the Story Contest, the top award goes to Sherry Wessel. She is a PSW who works at Fenelon Court Long-Term Care in Fenelon Falls. You can check out her winning essay in this issue of the Newsletter! Two other SEIU members who wrote compelling stories were Heather Osborne and Joanna Chen.

This year we also tried something new- we had two contests which entailed members filling out small information cards, and sending them back to the union. We were truly overwhelmed by the response to this contest- more than a whopping 5,000 of you signed cards! That’s real purple passion. Of course this made the competition quite tough, but in the end we did have some strong winners. Special mention goes out to Renesa, Victoria Manor, and Nursing Home Port Perry who had 100% of their members sign cards!

We hope everyone had a happy Purple Day and look forward to celebrating with you in 2015!
