November 20th is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which is dedicated to honouring and mourning those who have lost their lives to violence, suicide, and injustice due to transphobia, their gender identity or gender expression.
In honour of the day, there will be a flag raising ceremony at City Hall on Monday, November 21st at 2:30 p.m.
Speaking at the ceremony will be Sebastian Gabriel Trujillo, who is a member of the SEIU Healthcare Executive Board. Sebastian, a trans man, was moved by his parents from Mexico to Canada in 2001 in hopes of him living a safe and free life. 15 years later, Sebastian is happily married and has a two-year-old child.
Sebastian will speak about his journey and the obstacles he has overcome in both his personal and professional lives. He has worked at Mount Sinai Hospital for the past 10 years and recently worked with SEIU Healthcare to ensure his workplace is a safe and accommodating space.
